Baby

Last week, we heard that one of my daughter's best friends' mother is pregnant. Whenever there is an opportunity we talk about having baby's and why some black children have white mothers. My daughter is going through a phase right now in which she doesn't want to talk about the subject. She even puts her hands over her ears sometimes and says she doesn't want to hear it. I think she is protecting herself against information she is not ready to deal with yet. When we were in the car driving home I said to her: "Isn't it exciting that Z. is going to have a baby brother or sister?" She looked at me and said: "Well, maybe her mother doesn't want to keep the baby and then it is going to have a new mother." I had tears in my eyes when I explained to her that Z's mother would not give her baby away because she loves him/her very much and that her African mother also loved her, but just couldn't take care of her. And that I would never give her away, because even if she hadn't been in my belly, she is my daughter and I love her so very much. Isn't it sad, she is only 6 years old and has to deal with such difficult issues already.
